Mercedes-Benz has launched the long-wheelbase electric GLC in China, offering three five- and six-seat variants priced from 299,900 yuan. The model is based on an 800-volt architecture and uses an NMC battery supplied by CATL.

Mercedes-Benz has launched the five-seat Liujin version of the electric GLC in China at a starting price of 338,000 yuan (approximately €43,780). Customers can also pre-order two additional variants: the five-seat Huiyin from 299,900 yuan (around €38,850) and the six-seat Xingbo from 388,800 yuan (approximately €50,300), according to CnEVPost, citing Mercedes-Benz.

For the Chinese market, Mercedes-Benz has stretched the electric GLC’s wheelbase to 3.03 m, making it 5.5 cm longer than the standard-wheelbase version. The company has also revised the rear seating. In the six-seat configuration, the electric GLC gains a third row of seats for the first time in China.

Technically, the model is the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle to be based on the new Mercedes-Benz Electric Architecture (MB.EA). It combines an 800-volt system with an 85.5 kWh NMC battery supplied by CATL, offering a CLTC range of up to 703 kilometres. Mercedes says charging from 10 to 80 per cent takes 22 minutes, but has not disclosed the peak DC charging power. The all-wheel-drive variant features two electric motors with a combined output of 310 kW, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds.

Mercedes localises software and driver assistance systems

Beyond the dimensions and seating layout, Mercedes-Benz has also adapted the electric GLC’s digital features for the Chinese market. The assisted driving system comes from Chinese supplier Momenta, in which Mercedes-Benz holds a stake. It is designed to provide navigation-based driver assistance in both urban traffic and on motorways.

The voice assistant integrates ByteDance’s Doubao AI model, enabling it to understand regional language variants such as Cantonese. The cabin features a 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen. With the long-wheelbase electric GLC, Mercedes-Benz is pursuing a broad localisation strategy for China that extends beyond the longer wheelbase and optional six-seat layout to include software and driver assistance systems. In China, the model will compete with the BMW iX3, Audi Q6L e-tron, Tesla Model Y, Xiaomi SU7 and a range of domestic EVs.

The challenges Mercedes-Benz faces with EVs developed specifically for China are reflected in the CLA L. According to media reports, production of the long-wheelbase model, which was also developed exclusively for the Chinese market, has been temporarily suspended at the Beijing Benz joint venture. Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed the reported production halt. The reports also claim that the company sold just 627 units in the first half of 2026.

Against this backdrop, the launch of the electric GLC marks an important step in Mercedes-Benz’s China strategy. Unlike the CLA L, the company combines a longer wheelbase with locally tailored features while also integrating Chinese technology partners for its driver assistance system and AI functions. Whether this deeper localisation will translate into stronger demand remains to be seen once sales begin.
